Los Angeles Lakers 2012: I Can't Wait To Watch

By Sarah Williams on November 1, 2012

Basketball season is in full swing as of Tuesday, October 30! Over the summer of 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers made some of the biggest trades in recent years (as well as some other, less local teams). Many big names were transferred to and from the Lakers, including Andrew Bynum who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers. Big names who now play for the Los Angeles team include Steve Nash (traded from the Phoenix Suns) and Dwight Howard (from Orlando Magic). Fans are very excited about the possibilities that the Lakers have in store for us this season.

The Lakers had a perfect pre-season, in the sense that they lost every single game. However, fans believe that this disastrous pre-season is not a foreshadowing of what is to come. The Lakers in the pre-season were not using their starting players due to injuries, as well as resting up for the regular season. Although no team in the history of the NBA has ever made the postseason after going winless in pre-season play, the Lakers have too much talent and experience in their starting five.

Their first game which happened on the first day of the season, was against the Dallas Mavericks (2011 NBA Champions). Unfortunately, the former NBA champions beat the Lakers 99-91. Pau Gasol lead the Lakers scoring 23 total points, grabbing 13 rebounds and giving six assists, as well as three blocks. One Lakers fan puts a positive spin on their loss last night, explaining that since the Mavericks are good, so there is still hope for the Lakers to win more games in the brand new 2012 season. Dwight Howard will be returning from his long break in which he took after a back surgery in April.

Even after a loss to the Portland Trailerblazers, Laker Nation is still strong. Speaking to a fan, Augusto Vega, about what could happen this season, he proudly said: “We expect to win it all. It’s impossible not to with the star-studded line up we have. If (and when) we win the championship, Kobe Bryant will be compared to the all star player and Hall-of-Famer Michael Jordan, because the two will have the same number of championships won.”

So far, the 0-2 Lakers are showing signs that they will soon be a dominant team. Dwight Howard is on fire so far, posting 33 points against Portland and Kobe has been solid thus far. The issue is currently filling the gaps on the bench, along with waiting and seeing the prognosis of the injury for star point guard Steve Nash. Steve Blake, his backup, has declined in recent years and might force the Lakers to bolster their fairly weak bench.

No matter what, this year will be fun to watch. To the Lakers,  good luck this season!
