5 Must-Have Apps When Living With Roommates

By Brittany Loeffler on September 8, 2016

An essential part of the college experience is living with roommates. Sharing a living environment with a stranger, or even a friend, can be difficult to adapt to, especially when you have your own routines and way of living.

It’s a time to learn and grow and take on adult responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and paying the electric bill, and your college roommates will be right along side of you as these tasks come tumbling towards you. Thankfully we live in the age of the iPhone and have apps that can make living with roommates much easier!

1. Venmo

Venmo is one of the best and most useful apps to have while in college. In this day and age it’s rare to have a wallet full of cash when you’re going out on the weekend. Venmo allows you to pay people back straight from your phone so you will never hear the excuse “I’ll pay you back when I get some cash” again!

This is perfect when living with roommates for splitting utility bills, groceries, or any other everyday expenses that might need to be split.

2. GroupMe

GroupMe is an app that specializes in group chats. Communication is key when living with others, so setting up a group chat is absolutely necessary for everyone to be on the same page for which chores need to be done, who is picking up the next gallon of milk, or when someone is having friends over one night.

With the app you can favorite messages, start private conversations with someone, and mute the conversation when it just gets too overwhelming.

3. Tody

If having a clean home is a priority for you and your roommates, Tody is the app for you! It is used for making lists of chores that need to be done around the house. We all know the stress that comes with college and finals; don’t let a messy house stress you out even more. This app will help you and your roommates fairly divide the cleaning and maintenance of your home. It also tells you how long it has been since the floors were swept!

4. White Noise

White Noise is the go-to app for when you need some alone time. Yes, living with friends is fun, adventurous, and filled with laughs, but sometimes you need some time to yourself. This app has multiple settings ranging from ocean waves crashing to the cliché rainstorm to a vacuum cleaner, so you can block out everything that is happening and relax.

It’s also useful for when your roommates have the urge to party on a Tuesday night before one of your biggest exams of the semester. Just put in some headphones and get lost in your preferred environment!

5. Find My Friends

Find My Friends is an app that already comes installed on the iPhone and with your roommate’s permission allows you to see their location. This can be useful to see if your roommates are home, if you are meeting up with them somewhere, or if they don’t come home one night you can make sure they are safe.
